This Friday, Earth Day 2022 will focus the world’s attention on something we at Sloan have known for more than a century.
Sustainability is good for business.
Sustainable use of natural resources is essential for the planet and all its inhabitants. Many people, however, still cling to the idea that “business” and “sustainability” are on opposite sides of a great conflict, as if progress by one side must somehow mean a loss on the other.
But nothing could be further from the truth, and we’ve been proving it for 116 years. Earth Day 2022 is all about the vital alliance of business and the environment.
Here’s a closer look.
Sustainability is the Path to Business Success
A green future is a prosperous future.
That’s the core message of Earth Day 2022—that when businesses, governments, and ordinary citizens invest in sustainability, we won’t merely make the planet healthier, but we will also generate healthier business results.
Here’s why: In recent years, institutional investors and pension funds have begun to focus on the environmental and social impact of their portfolios. That has created a direct correlation between sustainable business practices, share prices, and business performance.
This connection means that companies with strong Environment Social Governance (ESG) standards enjoy better profitability, stronger finances, happier employees, and more resilient stock performance.
In other words: Sustainability is good for business.
Good Corporate Stewardship is Good Business
At Sloan, we’re acutely aware of the importance of sustainability—not just to the environment, but to all the organizations we work with.
“There is a continued push for sustainability and wellness,” says Sloan Senior Manager of Strategic Accounts Kim Darke-Miller. Architects, designers, and engineers know that “People want to know, ‘If I'm going to work in this building, what are the materials and products that are in here? What are you doing to help the globe? What are you doing to make sure that our environment is going to be healthy for a long time?’”
Sloan Director of Corporate Sustainability Patrick Boyle says, “There are various studies that have shown that younger professionals really want to work for a company that is doing right for their communities and the environment. They're looking at companies that have made these promises and set these goals to be more sustainable—to be a good corporate steward.”
Making Sustainability a Priority at Sloan
This focus on sustainability is why our commercial restroom products lead the industry in water saving technology, from low flush volume flushometers, to hybrid and waterless urinals, to reclaimed water flushometers that help facilities recycle grey water to preserve freshwater sources.
It’s why we’ve committed to a new level of product transparency, with an industry-leading offering of third party-verified, cradle-to-grave transparency reports that recognize the impact of many of our most popular high-efficiency products through their entire life-cycles.
It’s why we’ve started a zero landfill initiative at our Franklin Park, Illinois headquarters, and it’s why both our manufacturing facility in China and our office in India are LEED certified.
We make environmental sustainability a priority, and so do our customers. If Earth Day 2022 makes the impact it should, businesses worldwide will soon start putting the environment first, too.
National Hug a Plumber Day—April 25
It may not be as well-known as Earth Day, but we’d like to give a quick shout-out to National Hug a Plumber Day on April 25.
After all, our water-saving technologies wouldn’t be able to save water if they were never installed. If you have a plumber you trust, help them out by sharing their name with your friends and neighbors.
