Los Angeles International Airport (LAX)

The Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) is a happening place, serving almost 75 million passengers in 2016. With non-stop flights to over 100 U.S. locations and 40 countries, thousands of people pass through the airport every day, where they can spend their layover dining at posh restaurants and shopping at several retail stores.

Thanks to the $14 billion LAX Modernization Project, building owners have added new and updated concourses, restrooms and other spaces with the goal of maximizing sustainability and efficiency. Architects had to specify commercial restroom products they knew could handle the high volume of users. A variety of Sloan products were selected for restrooms throughout the facility, where contractors benefit from easier, more cost-effective maintenance, while the design aligns with the architects’ vision for a restroom of the future.

Efficiency Takes Off

To truly modernize a restroom, architects designed with the future in mind. Sloan Optima® Automatic Sink Faucets are CalGreen (California Green Building Code) certified, meeting the building owner’s need for water sustainability. The faucets also harvest solar energy to deliver a complete sustainable solution. Water efficiency is enhanced with a low flow rate of 0.5 gpm/1.9 Lpm standard, aligning with the LAX Modernization Project goals.

Sustainability on Deck

Like many high-traffic restrooms, LAX had sanitation issues in the sink area, including paper towels and water on the floors. The AER-DEC® Integrated Sink System solved this problem, with a touch-free soap dispenser, Basys® automatic sensor faucet, dryer and sink basin designed to work together. This system was also customized to include icons to easily communicate soap dispenser, faucet and hand dryer to international travelers. To contribute to the overall design, Sloan’s partner Stone and Steel created a sleek countertop to lend a higher-end look.

High and Low

In keeping with the airport’s airy design, Sloan Wall Hung Water Closets with Sloan Royal Sensor Concealed Flushometers are off of the floor to create space and make cleaning easier. Their simple, curved design creates smooth transitions between surfaces that fit well into a variety of environments. These water closets also meet EPA’s WaterSense criteria to save thousands of gallons of water while still providing optimized flushing performance by pairing with Sloan’s automatic flushometers.

24/7 Convenience

Airports run every day of the year, so restroom maintenance demands important focus. Sloan Standard High Efficiency Urinals (HEU), are also WaterSense listed and feature Royal automatic sensor flushometers, provide LAX maintenance personnel convenient cleaning and reduced maintenance costs. Hands-free activation increases hygiene for users.
